Gayatri Mantra

I have to admit that i just came across this mantra a few days ago. Very shameful indeed. Being a Hindu i was being so ignorant. I started to ask around and realised that most of my friends are in a same boat as me. I tried to listen to perfect my pronunciation in You Tube and i was amazed and ashamed at the same time to see how people across the world reciting this mantra lovingly. Try for yourself and feel the calmness engulf you.


GAYATRI MANTRA( The mother of mantras)

The Gayatri Mantra is the universal prayer enshrined in the Vedas, the most ancient Scriptures of Man. A Universal prayer is that which is to be chanted with devotion for one's spiritual benefit in all the ages in any part of the world. We have to recite the Mantra as follows.

BHUR BHUVA SVAHA
TAT SAVITUR VARENYAM
BHARGO DEVASYA DHEEMAHI
DHI YO YONAH PRACHODAYAT


The Gayatri Mantra can be translated as

OM

Para Brahman

BHUR

Bhu Loka (Physical Plane) - This refers to the five elements this body is made up of

BHUVA

Bhuva Loka (Middle Plane) - This refers to the power in man which animates the body. This is actually the Prana Sakthi

SVAHA

Swarga Loka (Heaven)

TAT

That, this refers to God, or Paramatma.

SAVITUR

That from which all is born

VARENYAM

Fit to be worshipped

BHARGO

The Radiance, the Spiritual Effulgence, the light that bestows wisdom.

DEVASYA

Divine Reality

DHEEMAHI

We Meditate

DHI YO

Buddhi, Intellect

YO

NAH

Our

PRACHODAYAT

This is a great mantra to recite . Try to chant everyday , you will see the difference.

Hi mirugam.... i know the mantra by heart and also have a cd version to listen to everyday. I was told the best time to chant the mantra is early in the morning. U can get the cd anywhere... try S. Janaki version.... her melodious voice will bring u to enlightenment!

ha ha.....i guess so.....what a moron i was for not knowing this mantra before this...

I'm going to recite it daily onwards today.

It relaxes one's mind !!...just recite it whn ur feeling tensed or necessary...or whn u want to...nobody can question u...lol..

Don't beat urself over it mirg.... i was unaware of it myself until about 3 yrs ago. My mom had to drive some sense into me before i actually paid attention to the mantra. When i was reciting the mantra in my heart it didnt make any sense to me.... but the moment i listened to S. Janaki singing the mantra it just blew me away..... that's when i started to appreciate the beauty of the mantra.

AUM being the sound symbol of Parmatman (Supreme Reality), it is considered to be the first vibration as sound emanating at the beginning of creation. From the three matras of AUM came out the three 'feet' of Gayatri, and from its three 'feet' came out the three Vedas and the three Vyaahrtis BHUR-BHUVAH-SUVAH representing the three cosmic world planes.
From A came out tat savitur varenyam which expanded itself into the Rg-Veda and the cosmic plane Bhuh.
From U came out bhargo devasya dhimahi, which expanded itself into Yajur Veda and the plane of bhuvah.
From M came out dhiyo yo nah prachodayat- which expanded itself into Sam Veda, and the plane of suvah.
The first Veda RG is stuti-para-devoted to devotion. The second Veda Yajur is kriya-para - devoted to work (action). The third Veda Sam is jnana-para -devoted to knowledge.
Om, we meditate(dhimahi) on the spiritual effulgence(bhargas) of that adorable Supreme Divine Reality (varenyam devasya), the source or projector (savitr) of the three phenomenal world planes the gross or physical (bhuh) the subtle or psychical (bhuvah) and the potential or causal (suvah), both macro cosmically or externally and micro cosmically or internally.
May the Supreme Divine Being(Tat) stimulate(prachodayat)
our(nah) intellect(dhiyah), so that we may realise the Supreme Truth.
