Require info regarding tamil school
Tue Sep 10, 2013 8:52 pm by Positivevibe
I just moved from Chennai, I am looking for admission for my 6 year old kid.
After my extensive search, understand that I can place my kid only in international school, as both of us are holding only professional visa.
Can someone suggest me, if there is any private or tamil school which will admit foreign national?

Private Tuition

Do you send your kids to private tuition after school or do you teach them yourselves? What are the pros and cons of sending kids to private tuition after school? Is it an unnecessary burden for the kids or is it seen as much needed assistance for the kids in terms of education?

A follow up to the discussion we started way back in the little india days. I found this one article dated Jan 2008 about the now famous International Irish University which i was following closely. It was quite an elaborate operation with graduation ceremonies etc.

Private School
Tue Sep 09, 2008 11:41 pm by VJeyaa
Can someone from the education line give me some pointers about private schooling? I have been thinking about this recently as my daughter has come of enrollment age to the primary school. My current considerations are:
1. Sekolah Sri Murni
2. Sekolah Sri Chempaka
3. Convent Bukit Nenas (my personal preference)
We are also thinking of registering to a nearby Govt school, as a "just in …

Backbencher: Local students are intellectually weak
The Star, 12/12/08
LOCAL university students are intellectually weak, not because they get involved in politics but, because they are too lazy to study, says a backbencher.
Datuk Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN — Pasir Salak) said the students did not read books but merely relied on notes from lecturers.
“They are lazy to do research and also can’t be bothered to read anything in English,” he said when debating the Universities and University Colleges Bill yesterday.
“This is because it is difficult. A headache for them to do so.”
Meanwhile, amendments to the University and University Colleges Act 1971 were passed after a lengthy debate, despite attempts by Opposition MPs to make their own amendments to the proposed Bill.
Tony Pua (DAP — Petaling Jaya Utara) had earlier submitted 10 proposed amendments to the Speaker.
.....
Student leaders, however, rejected amendments to the Act.
Ridzuan Mohammad, 22, an Undergraduate Movement for Abolishing University and Colleges Act secretariat member said Tajuddin should retract his statement, adding that those who were lazy were only a minority.

Re: Backbencher: Local students are intellectually weak
I agree with him with data or without. I would say that most Malaysian students are not equiped with enough confidence to seek knowledge on their own. They rarely raise question or argue in lecture hall. They prefer to receive the input and memorize.
Who should we blame?...of course...our EDUCATION SYSTEM.
In primary or secondary level, we rarely give them oppurtunity to use their thinking skills.Parents and teachers push them hard to study for exam. These children study hard by memorising facts from bundles of notes and books without actually THINKING.
When this SMART students with strings of As enters the ivory tower and asked to seek information and be innovative and critical, the lost direction and become stagnant.

Not all lecturers are like that. Maybe the dummy ones are trying to play demi-god. This happens when not highly qualified lecturers are given to task to educate.
Well, lousy lecturers are not a reason to be stagnant mentally. Under -graduates should always think analytically and try to equip themselves with knowledge.

There are ways to put forward your argument without sounding disrespectful or arrogant. The way you aproach it is to make it sound like you are interested in discussing this with your lecturer instead of challenging his or hers opinion.

Re: Backbencher: Local students are intellectually weak
All these make me think that kindergarten education is one of the best and most effective in a persons life.
If you think about it, it was perhaps the only time(probably) that we were encouraged to learn by play or actively learn by discovery. It was all downhill after that when we are forced to memorise this and that.
Personally i dont care what the MP thinks. He is talking about the symptom not the cause. Sure anyone with a brain can say the same thing and can come to the same conclusion. What has he contributed to solve this problem?

I guess this is no more happening nowadays. I sent my son to a very reputable kindagarten when he is 4, just to mingle and socialize. To my utter disappointment he was subjected to difficult task and punished if the task in not completed or if there is any error. My poor baby got very restless and lost interest in learning.
They even give "EXAMS" for these little babies and dissapoint them by giving "0" in red and make fun of it. Yes, my son brought back a paper with big red zero on it for spelling and of course with teary eyes.
I started to ask around and most kindies do have exam for children as young as four except government aided kindies.
So, maybe this kindies do promote self discovery and so on in their attempt to attract parents but they too are exam orientated.

We cannot blame the teachers 100%. Sometimes it is the parents who pester the management to be strict and give lots of work for their children. Some recommend the kindies telling how good is certain kindies because they are very strict and give lots of work.

Those days there were very less private kindies which charges RM400 to RM500 per month. We used to go to gov kindies and than straight to year 1.
