As long as South India exist, it shouldn't matter. Tamil will always exist. I think what many tamil literature experts concern was that more Indians were going into other fields other than tamil language(like IT bla bla bla)....thats why you had a small boomming of movies based on tamil language fairly recent.

Younger generation Indians(from India) weren't so interested in literature. If this continued, they were afraid Tamil would loose its shine(it wont die of course...but who is going to carry on the literary tradition of the language?). That is why a lot of them praised the Tamils overseas as some of them can speak even better tamil than Indians. I suppose some Tamils living overseas have a more deeper desire to discover their roots hence truly study deeply the origin of their ancestor and their language.

For overseas Tamils, i dont think percentages matter. As long as some have interest in learning their heritage its good enough.
